Board Profiles 2017-2018

Leslie Hovey – President

Ms. Hovey is Vice President – Senior Legal Counsel at AT&T, specializing in corporate real estate transactions.  She has been with AT&T and Cricket Communications (purchased by AT&T in 2014) since 2007.  Prior to joining Cricket, Ms. Hovey was the owner of Hovey & Associates, a law firm representing real estate owners, managers and developers respecting purchase and sale, leasing and financing of commercial office, retail and industrial property, and compliance with Department of Real Estate Regulations.  Previously, she was a partner at Hovey & Kirby, where she handled all aspects of complex real estate sale and financing transactions, and lease negotiations. Before joining Hovey & Kirby, Ms. Hovey was an attorney at Latham & Watkins. Ms. Hovey was admitted to the California Bar Association in 1988 after completing a one year position as a Judicial Law Clerk for the United States District Court, Southern District (Honorable Judith N. Keep).  Ms. Hovey holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of California, San Diego. She received her Juris Doctor from University of California, Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco. While in law school, Ms. Hovey interned for the California Supreme Court (Justice Malcolm Lucas).

Holly Andrews – Past President

Holly Andrews works for KITCO Fiber Optics as Program Manager, West Coast Operations. Holly oversees the west coast field services team that supports the Navy and Coast Guard; maintains a large training center, and supports the manufacturing arm of the company. Holly as owned her own business, and worked for Fortune 100 companies at which she was able to learn best practices in program and project management, proposal development, financial analysis and human resources all of which serve her well today as the West Coast Operations Manager. Holly was an adjunct professor at University of San Diego where she had previously earned her MBA.

Chris Zafis – Treasurer

Chris Zafis is a Consultant with RGP or Resources Global Professionals. RGP is an international company that claims most of the Fortune 100 companies as clients, as well as smaller businesses. A former accounting/finance executive, she provides accounting and financial reporting services to companies that need help beyond their existing staffing.

Melissa Bustarde – Secretary

Melissa Bustarde, Partner at Mayfield Bustarde, LLP, is an attorney focusing on business and employment law. She serves as general counsel to small-to-medium sized businesses providing them with practical advice on corporate governance, contracts, employment, intellectual property and disputes. Melissa also forms new companies, such as corporations and LLCs and sets up all of their legal documents, including employment agreements, employee handbooks, and master service agreements. In addition, she also represents employees in discrimination, wrongful termination and related claims against employers.

Candace Berkman – Membership Co-Chair

Candace Berkman, CLTC is a Financial Advisor and Long Term Care Specialist with the Northwestern Mutual since 1998. The mission of Northwestern Mutual is to develop enduring relationships with clients by providing expert guidance for a lifetime of financial security. Candace works with clients to identify their definitions of financial security and then focuses on solutions that can help make those financial goals a reality. She helps find the right solutions for personal, family or business needs.

Candace attended the University of Southern California and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Speech Communication, she has been honored with the Life Impact Award from Northwestern – The Tribute to Women in the Industry Award from the YMCA and Woman Who Mean Business Award from the San Diego Business Journal.

Marty Stanley – Membership Co-Chair

Marty Stanley is an author, Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) , facilitator, trainer and executive coach.  She started her business Dynamic Dialog, Inc. In Kansas City, MO in 2000, Before moving to La Jolla in 2016. She provides practical and pragmatic tools for professional and organizational success. Her clients range from law and engineering firms to the health care and mortgage industries, hospitality and construction industries. Marty’s books, Get Out of B.E.D.(Blame Excuses and Denial): Change Your Outlook -Alter Your Outcomes and her most recent book From Type A to Type T:How to Be a Transformational Leader in a Bottom-Line World provide the foundation for personal and organizational effectiveness and success. Marty’s articles have been featured in hundreds of national and international trade and professional publications.  She currently serves as the immediate Past Chair of the Chapter Leadership Committee for the National Speakers Association. This committee of 20 professional speakers provides training and coaching to incoming presidents-elect for over 35 chapters on effective board management and governance.

Renee Hinton – Programs Co-Chair

Renee Hinton, Banking Center Manager with Comerica Bank. She oversees the overall leadership, management and success of the retail center. She is a relationship manager and is also in charge of sales, coaching and management of the banking center team to provide remarkable customer service. She has over 27 years of banking experience.

DeAndrea Brazel – Programs Co-Chair

DeAndrea Brazel has been active in the insurance industry since 1984. As an Employee Benefits Consultant, she provides insights and expertise to help employers compete with the “best in class” and achieve performance outcomes that support the best interests of their employees, their customers, and their future. DeAndrea married Jeff 29 years ago, and they have a daughter, Deprise who recently graduated from Law School. DeAndrea studied political science at San Diego State. She enjoys walking, Aztec Basketball, and cooking.

Shahpar Ostovar – Member at Large

Shahpar (Shapar) Ostovar lived several years in Italy, while raising her two young boys and working for ‘Food & Agriculture of the United Nations (F.A.O.)’. During those years, she became familiar with many different cultures and ethnics which became her richness in dealing with her life and better understanding the importance of values of different cultures and mentalities. Shahpar speaks five languages and her friends call her “The Internationally Spirited”.  Shahpar’s people-oriented personality was the driving force to choose Real Estate career. Her goal for each client is to help them achieve their goals in regards to buying or selling a house. With more than 14 years of real estate experience, she offers a comprehensive, personalized and results-oriented real estate service to assist her clients buying or selling homes. She is a member of National Association of Realtors (NAR), California Association of Realtors (C.A.R.) as well as San Diego Association of Realtors (SDAR).

Ann von Gal – First Friday Co-Chair

Ann von Gal, Partner, Olmstead von Gal Associates, Marketing, Advertising, Graphic Design. “When your company wants a strong presence in the marketplace, we listen.”

Susy Thomas – First Friday Co-Chair

When a child on a family vacation from Detroit to California, Susy asked her Father, “Why don’t we live here?”  After she graduated from Michigan State University, she came to San Diego and was in purchasing for a nationwide restaurant group. After taking over the real estate department of the company, she left to work for several years with CRBE. She used that same experience and professionalism to start her own residential real estate company with Route 56 Realty. In the meantime, she raised her 4 terrific children.  Susy plays tennis 3 -4 times a week and can be found at the gym mornings at 6 AM to keep in shape and sane.

Kim Benson – Communications Chair

Kim BensonKim is a Financial Planner at Creative Capital Management Investments, LLC (CCMI).  CCMI offers highly personalized and proactive financial planning and investment management services to business owners, professionals, individuals and families.  Kim is also a CPA and has been working towards achieving her Certified Financial Planner™ certification.  Previously, Kim spent 12 years in the finance organization of a large Fortune 100 company.

Jasmin Zunzunia – Casual Connection Co-Chair

Jasmin Zunzunia is the owner of J To Z Style, Inc. and represents a line of couture clothing for women called The Carlisle Collection. She is also the creator of “Geek Turned Chic”, a fashion blog inspired by leaving her 12 year career in technology to pursue her true love–fashion! Jasmin earned her MBA from USC and has a Bachelor of Science in Information and Computer Science from UC Irvine.

Javorka Gunic – Casual Connection Co-Chair

Javorka is a Senior Quality Assurance Manager for Acon Laboratories, a medical device manufacturing company.  The company produces OTC, over the counter, diagnostic devices (glucose meters, cholesterol meters), as well as  “point-of care” diagnostic equipment used in hospitals and doctor offices.  She oversees the team responsible for quality of products and compliance of Acon Labs internal processes with US and International regulations.
